Barack Obama has called for a new beginning between the United States and Muslims in a highly-anticipated speech in Egypt. The US President is seeking to repair relations that were damaged under the administration of his predecessor George W. Bush. Applauded at regular intervals by an audience at Cairo University, he paid warm tribute to Islam.

“I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed. That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn’t. And I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United State to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.” On the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, he repeated his support for a two state solution. “The only resolution is for the aspirations of both sides to be met through two states, where Israelis and Palestinians each live in peace and security. That is in Israel’s interest, Palestine’s interest, America’s interest, and the world’s interest.” President Obama ended his speech by declaring that the people of the world can live together in peace.More about: Barack Obama, Egypt, Mideast
