New Magritte Museum in Brussels

The new Magritte Museum has opened in the centre of Brussels. It contains the world’s largest collection of his work. More than 40 years after his death Magritte remains profoundly influential. His “pipe which was not a pipe” still fascinates art lovers.

Magritte often played with light and shade, and wanted to use his art to make people think about the “mystery without which the world would not exist.” His outlook on real life however was sombre. He didn’t want children and used to say that “we are all in a cellar, without even a tiny window”. Reflecting his work, the interior of the museum is dark blue and dimly lit to make the art stand out, and to provide a haven for visitors.More about: , ,
