Atlantic search for missing French jet

International search teams are scouring the Atlantic for the remains of the lost Air France jet that disappeared in a storm with 228 people on board.

Patience, persistence and luck will be needed to localise the wreckage in deep ocean waters in a zone between Brazil and West Africa. The Airbus A330 left Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night bound for Paris but lost contact with air traffic controllers in the early hours of Monday morning. As well as Brazil’s military, the United States has joined the list of nations offering its assistance. Hopes of a breakthrough were raised by reports that a commercial pilot had spotted what appeared to be something on fire on the surface of the ocean. But an initial search by a merchant ship in the area found no signs of burning debris from the missing plane.
