Chaabi – a form of traditional folk music from Magreb – is extremely popular in Morocco, and Abdellah Daoudi has been a major star in the musical world of Chaabi since a very young age.
This kind of music is normally played at weddings and large parties. It is music to dance and sing along with – based on lyrics from the Moroccan countryside, it reflects part of real Moroccan daily life.
Following Daoudi’s set was a performance by the leading female Chaabi musician, Zina Daoudia. For the first time, Zina Daoudia appeared on the same bill as Daoudi. They may be rivals, but for the audience at Mawazine, having these two great Chaabi stars on the same bill was a highlight of the Festival.
