Water leak sets EU alarm bells ringing

The European Commission headquarters in Brussels has been evacuated again after a second fire alert in nine days. There was no fire this time though: the alarm was triggered when hot water leaked from a pipe. Hundreds of Commission workers were told to leave the building, and a technician working on the pipe was taken to hospital with serious burns.

The alarm went off during a press conference by Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. On May 18th the building was evacuated after a small fire started in the basement, and worked its way up through a wiring shaft to the roof. An inquiry was launched into why the alarms then took 15 minutes to go off after the fire started.More about: ,
