Moroccan authorities have begun investigating a stampede at a major international music festival, which killed 11 people in the capital Rabat. The dead were among 70,000 spectators who had gone to a concert at a football stadium – one of nine venues for the Mawazine festival. Those who died were five women, two children and four men.

“We tried to take all precautions, “said Rabat’s Governor Hassan Amrani, “But there’s no such thing as zero-risk.” The stampede began as concert-goers tried to leave the arena early. The inquiry is looking into the possibility that they had found an unofficial exit. At another venue in Rabat, Stevie Wonder was playing the closing show of the week-long festival.More about: , ,
