Celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Germany’s constitution have continued near the landmark Brandenburg Gate.
In other parts of Berlin around a quarter of a million Germans gathered to celebrate their country rising from the ashes of World War 2. Germany’s President Horst Koehler has been marking his election win Saturday. His re-election by a special federal assembly in the Reichstag gave Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats and their conservative allies an important morale boost 4 months before September’s parliamentary election. Meanwhile more than a thousand radical left wing demonstrators marched through Berlin protesting at the 60th anniversary celebrations. There were a few minor scuffles but nothing on the scale of recent May Day protests. Their banners read get rid of capitalism ..get rid of the state.
