Spain and Portuguals’ Socialist Prime Ministers have organised joint electoral rallies in a show of transnational unity ahead of the European elections on June the 7th.

First José Socrates of Portugal accompanied his Spanish counterpart José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to a party meeting in Valencia. His message was a plea to turn out and vote: “These elections are an opportunity for a change similar to that which occured when the United States elected Barak Obama,” he told the crowds. The pair then boarded a jet together to repeat their double act in front of Portuguese supporters in Coimbra. The two leaders said a vote for the socialists was a vote for modernity and a new future. But as incumbent Prime Ministers at a time of deep economic crisis they face a difficult electoral challenge – and more than half of those quizzed for an opinion poll in Spain said they had little or no interest in the debate on the future of Europe.More about: European elections, Portugal, Spain
