UK retails sales holding up

British retail sales rose much more than expected in April with most sectors doing well.

The latest official data suggested that consumer spending in Britain is holding up despite the recession. However, bank lending and business investment fell in a sign that a recovery remains some way off. Government borrowing also hit a record high for April as the recession battered public finances.More about:
