The US Vice President is in Belgrade as part of a three-country visit to the Balkans.

Despite deep differences over the self-declared independence of Kosovo, Joe Biden was given a full military welcome. He is the highest-level American to visit Belgrade in more than two decades, and was greeted by the Serbian President. Biden said: “The United States does not, I emphasise, does not, expect Serbia to recognise the independence of Kosovo. It is not a precondition for our relationship or support for Serbia becoming part of the European Union.” Nationalist protesters accuse the US of being anti-Serb, with mistrust going back to the American-led NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999. Biden is also remembered here for supporting the arming of Bosnian Muslims in their fight against Bosnian Serbs in the early 90s.More about: Serbia, USA
