Hubble out of trouble and into the stars

world news

| |

As good as new — that is the verdict on the Hubble telescope after astronauts completed a difficult task to repair and refurbish the star-gazing space hardware.

It took 11 days and five tricky space walks; the astronauts had to contend with frozen bolts and tiny screws. But in the end mission control was happy.

Jon Morse, Astrophysics Division Director at NASA said:  “We expect to be able to see the assembly of galaxies even earlier than we had before. So we’re going to get more insight into that process, about where the first stars and first galaxies came from.”

NASA hopes the repairs will keep Hubble operational until at least 2014.
