Tamils in exile call for EU help

world news

Tamils living in exile have held demonstrations outside European Union and UN buildings in Brussels and Geneva.

EU foreign ministers have been meeting to discuss the latest developments, and to call for an independent probe into the recent battles. But the protesters say that is not enough. One man said: ‘‘We only ask the European Union ‘please go there !’ Don’t just say ‘stop the war, LTTE and the government. We don’t want that, only we believe you, the European governments. We are saying ‘We believe you, only you can help us.” The EU says it is appalled by reports of high numbers of civilian casualties. The government says the last of 72,000 civilians trapped in the war zone managed to escape. Many are now sheltering in various refugee camps, but the West is concerned about on-going restrictions on aid agencies and access to those who have been displaced.More about: ,
