Lou Ye’s film “Spring Fever” is in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Chinese authorities reportedly banned the director from making films for 5 years as a punishment for his 2006 film about the Tiananmen Square uprising. This new film was therefore shot secretly using hand-held cameras, and deals with more subjects likely to upset the Chinese authorities: homosexuality and the importance of the indicudual over the group. Spring Fever is about a man whose wife suspects him of adultery. She hires a detective and discovers that her husband’s lover is a man. Complications multiply when the detective and his girlfriend start an affair with the husband’s gay lover. The festival runs until 24th May.More about: Festival
