A French voter says: “I’d like to know why fewer people are interested in the European elections than in national elections?”

“Pierre Jonckheer, European deputy in the Greens group. I think that, to get more people’s attention in the European elections, some of the parliament members should be elected on transnational lists. The European election isn’t 27 national elections. They’re elections that should be conducted at the European level. We don’t have that at the moment. We should have members elected together at the same time on the same list, party be party — transnationally, therefore. Secondly, it shouldn’t be necessary to say ahead of time the names of the next presidents of the parliament or the European Commission. People get excited in an election if there is a real play in terms of personalities. So there’s another way each European political party could present its candidate as the Commission’s president and its candidate for the parliament’s president. It would allow choices in Europe – which are different – to get a bit more personal.”More about: European elections
