The alleged Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk has left the United States and is en route for Germany, where he faces trial for war crimes.

The 89-year-old has been deported and is on an overnight flight to Munich. He had been fighting the procedure since March, claiming to be too frail to travel. On Thursday, the last obstacle was removed when the US Supreme Court rejected his request to intervene in the case. In 1988, Demjanjuk was sentenced to death by an Israeli court, accused of being a notorious guard known as “Ivan the Terrible” at the Treblinka camp, where 870 thousand died during the Second World War. It was later found he was not Ivan, but he was later stripped of his US citizenship after officials discovered he had hidden the fact that he had worked at three other camps on his immigration forms. Demjanjuk, a native of Ukraine, denies that he worked as a guard at the Sobibor Nazi death camp and was involved in the deaths of 29 thousand Jews.More about: History
