An American-born journalist imprisoned as a spy in Iran has walked free after the appeal court reduced her sentence. Roxana Saberi was jailed for eight years last month when she was caught in the country after her press credentials had expired. But the 32-year-old is now at liberty to leave the country.

Her father, Reza Saberi, said: “Her sentence was cut down to two years, with five years suspension. So after five years, if there is nothing happened (sic), those two years will be forgiven.” Saberi, who has in the past worked for British and American media, has both US and Iranian citizenship. Her imprisonment became a new source of heightened tension between Tehran and Washington at a time when the Obama administration was hinting at moving closer to the regime, despite the Iranians’ pursuit of nuclear technology.More about:
