In the UK, there have been more revelations over politicians’ expenses, but this time it is those of the opposition Conservatives.

Leaked reports of controversial claims, until now mainly by Labour ministers and deputies, have appeared in the national press over the last few days. But it is alleged today that some Conservatives have also milked the system. Party leader David Cameron says it is fundamentally flawed. “We have to acknowledge just how bad this is,” he told reporters. “The public are really angry. We have to start by saying: look, this system that we have, that we use, that we operate, that we took part in, it was wrong and we are sorry about it.” Five Sinn Fein politicians, who have not even taken up their seats in the House of Commons, are also implicated in the scandal. The latest polls suggest Labour are trailing the Tories by as much as 22 points, with the local and European elections less than a month away. Meanwhile, plans for an independent auditing body are expected to be approved later today.
