The Israeli Prime Minister has made positive noises towards Egypt about his commitment to peace talks with the Palestinians. Benjamin Netanyahu and President Hosni Mubarak met in Sharm el-Sheik, a week before the Israeli leader is due in Washington for talks at the White House. The US and Egypt see the answer in creating a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu spoke of Israel and the Palestinians living in peace, security and prosperity. “We want to resume the peace talks with the Palestinians as soon as possible,” he said, “and I hope they will indeed resume in the coming weeks.” Netanyahu has yet to endorse the “two-state” solution and he did not at Sharm el-Sheik either, but Mubarak recognised the Israeli commitment to peace. “We re-state the need to resume negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian authority where they’ve come to a halt, taking into account all the questions relevant to creating an independent Palestinian state,” the Egyptian president said. Mubarak said Egypt expects Israel’s commitment to peace to be reflected in positive gestures, and added that Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian land are a hindrance to the peace process.More about: Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel
