An anti-immigration protest has sparked violent scenes in Athens.

Far-right activists clashed with police, attacking a former courthouse where illegal immigrants have taken refuge. Amid cries of “Greece for the Greeks”, firecrackers and large stones were aimed at the building, where hundreds have sought shelter. Three immigrants were injured. Some inside threw missiles back at the ultra-nationalist protesters. Elsewhere in the capital, trouble flared as counter-demonstrations were held in support of the immigrants, who are living in squalid conditions without water or electricity. Youths described by police as anarchists hurled fire bombs and set cars ablaze. Security forces responded with teargas, making a number of arrests.More about: Greece
