French Finance Minister favourite for IMF top job Israel’s new and controversial Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has continued his European tour with a visit to France.
Lieberman has said he hopes the tour, which will also take in the Czech Republic and Germany, will “promote the upgrading of our relations with Europe.”
His French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner, ignored opposition calls not to receive the outspoken Israeli nationalist. During the course of a meeting at the Quai d’Orsay, Kouchner called for the stalled Annapolis peace initiative to be revived, and reiterated his country’s support for a two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli problem. He also called on Israel to stop building settlements in disputed territory.
Outside the French ministry, pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered.
Many were carrying banners bearing slogans like “boycott Israel” and “no to Lieberman”.
