First day of gay marriages in Sweden

world news

| |

Dozens of people are expected to tie the knot this weekend as Sweden allows homosexuals to legally marry. Swedish law changed on May 1st, allowing same-sex couples who were previously in registered unions to be wed in a civil or religious ceremony.

Scandanavian countries were among the first in Europe to grant same-sex partners the same rights as married couples. The Lutheran church, the largest church in Sweden, has said it is open to celebrating and registering same-sex unions, although it wants to reserve the term ‘matrimony’ for heterosexual marriages.
