May Day demonstrations in Turkey have turned to violence.

While thousands took part in a peaceful rally with crowds carrying banners with slogans such as “Long live May Day” and “Repression will not stop us”, in other parts of the city it was a different story altogether. Protesters hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at the police who fired water cannon and warning shots to disperse the crowds. Eleven officers were hurt and dozens of protesters arrested. In a symbolic victory for unions demonstrators were allowed to take the rally to Taksim square. It has been closed to Labour Day marches since May 1st 1977 when unknown gunmen opened fire on the crowds killing dozens of people.More about:
