Pope Benedict XVI has visited central Italy to meet survivors of the earthquake that struck the region of Abruzzo earlier this month.

The pontiff went to a refugee camp in the medieval town of Onna where 40 of the village’s 300 inhabitants died. Addressing survivors the 82-year-old Catholic lead expressed his condolences. He said: ‘‘I admire the courage, the dignity and the faith with which you have coped with this tough test, demonstrating a great willingness not to give in to adversity and it is not the first earthquake that you have faced.’‘ Around 65,000 people remain homeless following the devastating earthquake that killed nearly 300 people. Some 36,000 are still living in tents while many others are staying in hotels paid for by the government.More about: , ,
