Recount in Moldova hands communists victory

Moldova’s ruling communist party has been declared the winner in a disputed parliamentary election following a recount.

It was ordered by president Vladimir Voronin after the original results were contested by the opposition. The new figures differ little from the original ones, giving the communists just under 50 percent of the ballot. Earlier this month protesters denounced the April 5 vote as rigged and ransacked the president’s offices and parliament. Voronin accused the opposition of trying to foment a coup, backed by neighbour Romania.More about:
