As the skiing season comes to an end the cost of this exciting but dangerous passtime for some has been high. Every year lives are lost in avalanches, and the worst can hit villages and communities taking on disaster proportions. Until now the only way of sweeping the slopes clear of excess snow has been with hand-positioned dynamite charges. Now a strange bell-shaped device has been developed in Chambéry, France, and it is about to ring the changes on one of the ski patrol’s most dangerous jobs.
