Austrian Holocaust denier goes on trial

An Austrian Holocaust denier has gone on trial for promoting Nazi ideology

The start of the trial in Austria coincides with the anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birth.

68-year-old Gerd Honsik was already sentenced to 18-months in jail for Holocaust denial in 1992, but fled to Spain during his appeal. He spent 15 years in exile there, until his extradition two years ago.

Madrid finally handed him over after twice refusing, arguing that Holocaust denial and Nazi propaganda are not illegal in Spain.

Honsik faces up to 20 years in jail on the new charges of re-engaging in the public promotion of Nazi ideology via books, magazines and the Internet.

A verdict is expected later this week.
