The US envoy to the Middle East is hoping to convince Israel’s new government to accept a two state solution.

George Mitchell has been in meetings with Benjamin Netanyahu, but the right-wing leader has said “no deal yet” until Palestinians recognise the State of Israel. Both sides are putting a brave face on what appears to be a deadlock. An earlier meeting with Israel’s foreign minister was reported as being a “dead end”. “It is in the United States’ national interest that there will be a comprehensive peace settlement in the Middle East that should include settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a two-state solution,” said Mr Mitchell. The talks coincide with Palestinians demonstrating in Gaza demanding the release of prisoners in Israel. George Mitchell will now travel to the west bank to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.More about: Benjamin Netanyahu, Mideast
