GE profit fall not as bad as feared

General Electric has reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit.

The largest US conglomerate is seen as a good gauge of the state of the economy there due to the size and breadth of its operations. A 36 percent drop in net income came partly from lower earnings at its loans division and the NBC Universal media unit where advertising revenue was down.
