Cuba-US relations to top Summit of Americas

As leaders gather in Trinidad and Tobago for ‘the fifth Summit of the Americas, there are signs of a softening in relations between the US and Cuba.

Cuba is not taking part in the meeting, which will see more than 30 heads of government, including US president Barack Obama, in Port-of-Spain. Security in the capital is tight with the global recession and US-Cuban relations expected to top discussions. Both countries have said they are willing talk on a number of issues. US president Barack Obama, who will be meeting most of his peers from Latin America and the Caribbean for the first time, said during a visit to Mexico yesterday he wanted to recast the United States relationship with Cuba.
