Overnight security forces tightened their grip on Bangkok cracking down on the remaining areas of chaos.

The anti-government demonstrators had called for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to be reinstated after he was deposed in a coup in 2006. Yesterday, the man currently in the job Abhisist Vejjajiva had appealed for calm urging protesters to go home. He had claimed it was a do-or-die moment for the rule of law. Earlier today, Thai police arrested three men suspected of planning to burn down a bank and a skyscraper in the capital, claiming to have found almost 50 molotov cocktails on the trio. For a country heavily dependent on tourism the political crisis engulfing Thailand could be potentially devastating. Yesterday’s violence saw 2 people killed and more than a 100 injured. Parts of Bangkok looked more like a war zone after troops and protesters fought running battles. Demonstrators hurled rocks and petrol bombs at security forces commandeering and torching the city’s buses. Troops also used live ammunition, although the army insists this was only fired in the air.More about: Thailand
