While socialist leader Paxti Lopez prepares to become regional prime minister of the Basque region, the Basque separatist group ETA says the new government will become its priority target.

ETA which delivered its message to the newspaper Gara is bracing for police crackdowns from the anti-independence nationalist coalition government headed by Lopez.

Lopez will be the first Basque prime minister since the region was granted wide autonomy in 1979.

The change of government for the Basque country was seen as signalling a new political orientation for the region.
