Moves to disconnect Internet users if they download music or films illegally have been rejected by France’s parliament.
Under a government-backed bill, Internet pirates would be given two warnings before a suspension of their account. Today’s defeat in the lower house is an embarrassing setback for President Nicolas Sarkozy’s administration. His ruling UMP party failed to turn out in force to approve the law which had already been backed by the upper Senate chamber. Under pressure to quell the flow of free songs and films on the Web, the government now plans an amended version of the bill.
