As more corpses are pulled from the earthquake rubble in Italy, the President has been on site saying there was a shared responsibility for the scale of the disaster.

Touring L’Aquila, near the epicentre of the tremor, Giorgio Napolitano said that building regulations had to be adhered to if lessons were to be learned. After visiting a makeshift mortuary, he praised rescue workers’ efforts. As the hours tick on, it is less and less likely that emergency crews will find any more survivors beneath the debris. The last person to be found alive was a 20-year-old woman dug from the ruins of a four-storey building late on Tuesday. Searches will continue at least until Easter Sunday. The death toll continues to climb. More than 270 people have been killed. Aftershocks still shake the region, sparking terror in survivors and making the work of rescue workers dangerous and difficult. Tomorrow, in L’Aquila, state funerals will be held for victims on what has been declared a national day of mourning.More about: Earthquake, Italy
