There has been no repeat of yesterday’s violence in Moldova but protesters continue to denounce last weekend’s parliamentary election. They maintain it was rigged to keep the Communists in power.

As demonstrators gathered today to demand the release of those arrested, the row took on a diplomatic dimension. President Vladimir Voronin, whose offices as well as parliament were ransacked on Tuesday, accused neighbouring Romania of instigating the unrest. But, as Bucharest rejected the veteran leader’s words as a “provocation”, Moldova took swift action, moving to tighten border controls with its neighbour. Romania’s ambassador was being expelled and visas will be needed for Romanians to cross into Moldova.More about: Romania
