Toiling through the night and now into the day rescue workers have been combing through a sea of rubble after a violent earthquake hit Italy yesterday morning.
Hopes are dimming of finding survivors. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said that more than 200 people have been killed in the tremor that shook the central region of Abruzzo.
Some 26 cities and towns have been hit, flattening houses, churches and buildings. More than 1500 people have been injured.
With aftershocks still rattling the area, nerves are very frayed and the work of rescue workers all the more perilous.
