Anti-NATO protests break police cordon

In spite of a massive police crackdown several hundred anti-NATO demonstrators have managed to enter the centre of Strasbourg to protest.

As well as cordoning off the city centre authorities cut off transport links to a campsite on the outskirts of the city, where thousands of people from all over the world had stayed overnight.

That measure did little to dissuade those determined to make their voice heard. The response was predictably hard.

In an operation, estimated to have cost the French and German taxpayer 110 million euros, Police used teargas and water cannon to quell and force back the crowd. Reports also indicate one man was wounded after being hit by a rubber bullet.

Elsewhere, German police say eight people were arrested after using diving equipment to cross the River Rhine, close to where NATO leaders had gathered.
