Friday’s usual rows of traffic were nowhere to be seen at the entrance to Strasbourg today, amid a major security operation for the NATO summit.

Some 300 people were arrested in yesterday’s street battles. And, in a bid to prevent further violence and protect NATO leaders, access has been severely restricted in and around the city. And that is not to the liking of some who live and work there. “We are being deprived of the fundamental right of free circulation in our country,” said one woman. “I think that is shameful. It is not a good democracy.” “I have never seen anything like it,” a long-time Strasbourg resident commented. He said he had experienced visits from Ronald Reagan and the Pope. “But I am totally amazed by what is happening.” France’s government is making no apologies for closed public buildings, empty shops and restricted public transport.
