Tens of thousands lined the streets of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, to bid a fond farewell to former President Raul Alfonsin, who died on Tuesday.

As president, Alfonsin guided the country towards democracy following the 1976-1983 dictatorship when the military killed thousands of dissidents and dragged the country into a disastrous war with Britain over the Falkland Islands. During the “Dirty War”, Alfonsin risked his life filing writs demanding officials reveal the whereabouts of missing leftists held in secret prisons. Even though Alfonsin’s economic policies were a total failure, leading to hyper-inflation and high levels of poverty, he is still considered a man who led by example.More about: Argentina
