Search and rescue operations are continuing after a boat carrying more than 250 illegal migrants heading for the EU sank off the coast of Libya.

Officials say a few bodies have been recovered and around 20 people rescued, but hundreds more are still missing. It has also been reported that a second boat, packed with more than 300 people, capsized in the same area. Libya is a popular departure point for African migrants trying to reach Europe. Last month Tripoli signed a new deal with Italy aimed at strengthening efforts to stem the flow. Officials say hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants from various African countries live in Libya, taking odd jobs until they earn enough money for a place on a boat.More about: ,
