UK minister red-faced over blue movie claim

British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has been left red-faced following the revelation that her husband used taxpayers’ money to buy two blue movies.

The government minister has already issued an apology for the expenses claim. Her husband, Richard Timney, has also spoken out. ‘‘I am really sorry for any embarrassment I have caused Jacqui,” he told reporters. “I can fully understand why people might be angry and offended by this. Quite obviously a claim should never have been made for these films and, as you know, that money is being paid back.’‘ Smith was away from the couple’s Worcestershire home when the pay-per-view adult films were watched. But the news, revealed in a Sunday newspaper, is embarrassing for the minister who is already under investigation for claiming taxpayers’ money on a second home. Smith, whose large department will oversee security at next week’s G20 summit in London, has said she will not be resigning over the scandal.
