Iran and US to co-operate on Afghanistan

The United States has said it wants to work with Iran to bring stability to Afghanistan. The news came at an international conference on Afghanistan in Moscow, attended by a delegation from Tehran. Washington acknowledged that Iran is an important player in the area, and Tehran has agreed all regional powers should help.

The conference stressed the need to crackdown on the drugs trade which has funded the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan and now in Pakistan. Moscow will not send troops to Afganistan, but offered help with supply routes and intelligence for US-led forces there. Russia is the world’s biggest heroin consumer; twelve tonnes of Afghan heroin cross its borders every year, enough for three billion doses.More about: , ,
