Protesters in Bangkok, Thailand have broken through a police cordon to besiege Government House, – the seat of Administration of Thai leader Abhisit Vejjajiva.

They want to see a return to power of Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a coup in 2006 following accusations of widespread corruption and abuse of power. Meanwhile thousands of Thai workers who earn less than 400 euros a month have been marching on Bangkok’s city hall to take part in a government handout scheme. Prime Minister Vejjajiva was there and said: “ What we tend to do is obviously to get the economy through this very difficult period in this quarter and also the next two quarters. We need to get the money quickly into the system and this is the quickest way of doing so.” Like other countries Thailand has launched a package of stimulus measures – including tax breaks – in a bid to ward of recession. Thailand is seeking 1.5 bilion euros in foreign loans and is drawing up plans to spend 35 billion on basic infrastucture projects like roads.
