British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met top executives from the world’s major banks to get their backing for tougher banking regulations before he headed to the European Parliament to say that world leaders at next week’s global financial crisis summit will do “whatever it takes” to create growth and jobs.

Brown said he wants Europe to play a key role in reforming the financial sector: “I want to see a globalisation that is open, free trading and flexible, but which is also reforming, inclusive and sustainable. That is the message, at these most testing of economic times, that Europe can send to, and shape with, the rest of the world.” At the G20 summit in London European leaders are keen to concentrate on boosting regulation whereas US President Barack Obama favours further economic stimulus.
