Denmark’s Prime Minister looks poised to become NATO’s next Secretary-General, amid reports the United States has now given him its backing.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen already had support from European heavyweights Germany, France and Britain. Washington’s endorsement would be crucial if Rasmussen is to replace Dutchman Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who steps down this summer. An announcement about his successor is expected at the next NATO summit, in early April, marking 60 years since the military alliance was founded. Demonstrators in Brussels, home to NATO headquarters, say the anniversary is no reason to celebrate. Their attempt to enter the NATO site today as an act of civil disobedience was thwarted by security forces.More about: NATO
