Netanyahu gets more time to form government

Israel’s right-wing Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu has won more time to form a government.

The Prime Minister-designate now has a two week extension to woo the centre-left Labour Party to join his coalition. Earlier Israeli President Shimon Peres gave Netanyahu 28 days to form a government after elections on February 10. Netanyahu says he needs more time because he claims he wants to form as broad a coalition as possible. Labour’s leader, outgoing Defence Minister Ehud Barak, said he would be asking his party to vote on a motion to join Netanyahu’s government next week. Observers say Labour’s influence could soften Netanyahu’s hardline team and help Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.More about: ,
