Benedict XVI arrives in Africa

The Pope has begun a trip to Africa, arriving in Cameroon for a two-day visit, after which he flies on to Angola. Steets were whitewashed and swept clear of debris in the capital, Yaounde, and hawkers banished for the duration of the visit.

It is the Pope’s first visit to Africa. He will visit charities and meet muslim leaders in Cameroon. On one of Africa’s most pressing problems, the spread of AIDS, Benedict did not wait until touchdown, saying to journalists on his plane the problem could not be solved by distributing condoms, which would only increase the problem.

AIDS has killed more than 25 million Africans since the 1980s.
