The funeral of a policeman in Northern Ireland has attracted mourners from all sides of the political divide.

Among those at the ceremony in Banbridge, south of Belfast, were politicians from all the main parties in the province, Catholic and Protestant alike, as well as senior Irish police. For the first time in history, Sinn Fein, the mainstream IRA’s political ally, sent representatives to a policeman’s funeral. Constable Stephen Carroll was shot dead on Monday. Two days earlier, two British soldiers were killed. IRA splinter groups who oppose the 1998 ceasefire in the province claimed responsibility. Senior Sinn Fein members have condemned the killings. But Constable Carroll’s killers have vowed there will be be no end to violence while northern Ireland is under British control.More about: IRA
