Barack Obama has renewed sanctions against Iran declaring it continues to pose an ‘‘extraordinary threat’‘ to US national security.

The American president said the routine extension would remain in place while Iran acted against US interests in the region. Obama also said the US would not give up its military superiority. ‘‘This nation will maintain our military dominance. We’ll have the strongest armed forces in the history of the world. We’ll do whatever it takes to sustain our technological advantage and to invest in the capabilities that we need to protect our interests and defeat and deter any conventional enemy,’‘ Obama declared. The Obama administration has said its prepared to extend a hand of peace to Iran if it gives up its nuclear ambitions. While Tehran insists its programme is for peaceful means only, the US and many western countries remain convinced Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb.More about: ,
