Biden warns NATO over risk of Afghan failure

world news

US Vice-President Joe Biden has met NATO allies to discuss a new strategy in Afghanistan. Biden said he had come to Brussels to listen and forge a consensus.

He warned members of the 26-nation bloc that failure to turn around military and political fortunes in Afghanistan could have consequences for them all. He said: “The deteriorating situation in the region poses a security threat not just to the United States but to every single nation around this table. It was from that remote area of the world that al-Qaeda plotted 9/11. It was from that very same area that extremists planned virtually every major terrorist attack in Europe.” More than seven years after the US-led invasion, insurgent violence is at its worst. The Taliban is also growing in influence in neighbouring Pakistan. While the US is to deploy 17,000 more troops, the European Union has said it will not send more soldiers but wants to help assure the political stability of the country.More about: ,
