British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has met Barack Obama at the White House, becoming the first European leader to meet the new US President face to face.

The two held an informal question and answer session at the White House, rather than the official press conference previously advertised. Obama said the “special relationship” as it is often referred to between the two countries, would get stronger and that it was important to him and to the American people. The focus of the meeting was the global economic downturn. Both said they were confident that the measures taken to ease the financial and economic crises would work. Brown will host a summit of the G20 group of developed and emerging economies in London on April 2, where the economic crisis is also expected to dominate the agenda.More about: Barack Obama
